Your bedding is an investment! Gainsborough products are crafted to a high standard and we hope our products will be cared for and loved for seasons to come.

Just like your favourite clothing, you can help your bedding to last longer by taking good care of it. We advise to always consult the guide on our care labels and follow the recommended care instructions.

We’d love to share with you some of our top tips for extending the life of your carefully chosen piece.

Our bedding is easy to care for and maintain. Most products are machine washable but depending on the size of your product and your washing machine, it may be best to leave the laundering to a trusted professional. If you do choose to wash your quilt at home, it is essential that you do not overload your washing machine.

  • Always separate your linens and bedding into light and dark colours and launder separately.
  • Warm machine wash (40 degrees) or cool machine wash on a gentle cycle, with a mild detergent, is the best way to clean your bedding. Take care not to use a bleach or optical brightener.
  • Always wash your wool fibres or fills on the wool cycle.
  • Wait until the detergent is fully diluted in the water before putting bedding or linens in the machine. Undiluted detergents can cause staining on the fabric.
  • Stains on quilts should be treated straight away. Isolate the stain and always move the filling away from the affected area before you spot clean accordingly.
  • Do not leave any bedding or linens in the washing machine after the cycle has finished. Remove promptly and shake out before drying.
  • Make sure your bedding is 100% dry before using or storing to avoid clumping or ruining the filling. The drying stage will require patience to ensure that the filling is totally dry.
  • To protect any colours or embellishments on your bed linen or sheets, always wash in warm or cool water on a gentle cycle inside out. For dark colours avoid washing powders that contain harsh bleaches or optical brighteners as they may cause fading over time. To keep whites white, add a teaspoon of bicarbonate soda to your laundry powder.

Drying and Airing

  • Always line or tumble dry correctly according to the instructions
  • Do not tumble dry on a hot setting. Set the dryer on a warm or cool setting to avoid any damage to the fabric or fill. Proper and thorough drying of your product is critical to avoid clumping or the growth of mildew.
  • Where possible air in the direct sunlight. The sun is a natural antibacterial agent which will keep your quilt fresh and remove odours. Regular airing frequently helps to increases the lifespan of quilts and maintains their freshness.
  • Plump quilts and pillows daily to maintain loft and fluff up the filling. Regular shaking and fluffing helps to provide better insulation and warmth.

  • It is critical to store your bedding and linen properly. Ensure your bedding and linen is completely dry before storage to avoid clumping or ruining the filling.
  • When not in use for long periods of time, try to store in a dry and well-ventilated cupboard or room.
  • We recommend always using your quilt and pillows with a cover at all times to protect from perspiration, soiling and wear.
  • We also recommend the use of a suitable mattress and pillow protector in addition to the cover to extend the life of your pillow and mattress and protect from stains.
